Charlize Theron Became UN Messenger of Peace in 2008 - foolowing is Report drom UNTV-November 2008: Actor and activist Charlize Theron was officially appointed today as a United Nations Messenger of Peace, tasked with promoting efforts to end violence against women.

At a press conference at the United Nations, Theron spoke about the situation in Africa, and how civil wars and political instability in places like Congo can create "an environment where sexual abuse and violence against women and young girls" are used as a tool of war.

The actor has been recognized for her work focusing attention and mobilizing efforts on social issues, particularly in her native South Africa, where she has the Africa Outreach Project, which provides funding for a mobile health and computer clinic that visits high schools in rural communities affected by HIV/AIDS.

Theron told UNifeed that her objective as a United Nations Messenger of Peace will be to "make sure that the world knows about this things and that they are not hidden", hoping that an informed public will "try and cause some change to stop it".

She said that by reaching individuals, one at a time, they can "go out into their communities and let that kind of knowledge be trickled down to their families, their communities, their community leaders, their brothers, their sisters."

The Academy Award-winning actor said that "as a human being, there's something in me that can't sleep at night knowing the things that I know" and that she "didn't need to become an actor to be interested in human suffering or trying to stop human suffering or violence against women and children."

She will join fellow actors George Clooney and Michael Douglas, as well as seven other internationally renowned individuals, as Messengers who advocate on behalf of the UN and focus global attention on its efforts to improve the lives of billions of people.
